Fepulea’I Margie Apa and Riana Manuel (Ngāti Pūkenga, Ngāti Maru, Ngāti Kahungunu)
21 Dec 2021
In April I moved home to New Zealand to personally lead the first and second phases of the recruitment part of the once in a generational health reforms. Phase one, establish the Boards for Health New Zealand and the Māori Health Authority. Phase two, see to successful conclusion the appointment of their inaugural Chief Executives.
What transpired to be an eight-month passage of time permanently in New Zealand away from partner and pup (thanks Delta) had so many silver linings, the standout of which was meeting with so many passionate and remarkable people determined to see the reforms succeed.
Certainly, there were a number of drivers for change but ultimately equity is at the heart of the reforms, success then marked by services and supports being delivered in new and different ways to ensure Māori, Pasifika and other groups, steadily and in time will come to enjoy equitable health outcomes with the general population.
How inspiring then for the country to hear the news that two truly remarkable and inspiring leaders, Fepulea’i Margie Apa and Riana Manuel (Ngāti Pūkenga, Ngāti Maru, Ngāti Kahungunu) will be taking the helm of Health New Zealand and the Māori Health Authority respectively.
Wāhine toa – ka rawe!!
