Hawke’s Bay DHB serves a population of 162,000 people It is one of 20 DHBs established in New Zealand in 2001 by the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000 and covers 14,164 square kilometers and accounts for 5.1 percent of New Zealand’s land area. The DHB employs over 2600 staff across it’s Provider Services, extending from Hawkes Bay Hospital in Hastings to Wairoa Hospital in the north of the District, with a number of smaller hospital and health facilities across the District.
The DHB has a wide range of specialist and community health providers in a service network that seeks to protect and promote health, reduce health inequities and foster community participation in health improvement. Growth in the population in Hawke’s Bay is being driven by a younger age profile in the Māori and Pasifika population, which results in a higher birth rate as well as increased life expectancy across the whole population. These projected population changes emphasise the need for HBDHB to maintain its focus on improving Māori and Pasifika health and to reorient the services to address and manage age related health issues as guided by the New Zealand Healthy Ageing Strategy.
