Social wellbeing enables people, whānau and communities to live the lives to which they aspire and includes both material conditions and quality of life. Toi Hau Tāngata | the Social Wellbeing Agency is at the nexus of some of the most challenging social issues which require a people-centred, integrated, sustainable and enduring approach to improve wellbeing.

The role of the Agency is to enable the government and other public sector agencies to better understand the needs and circumstances of New Zealanders, to support a more joined-up social sector, and strengthen the use of data and evidence in decision-making. The Agency advises the Government, key decision-makers and stakeholders on progress within the social sector and facilitates cross-cutting programmes of work.

Te Tumu Whakahaere | the Chief Executive leads the Agency to ensure it is delivering high quality policy advice and insights on cross-cutting social issues. The Chief Executive works collaboratively with colleagues from across the Public Service to leverage the Agency’s strategic policy and insights expertise and deliver cross-sector solutions to enduring social issues that other agencies cannot achieve alone.

Excellent leadership by Public Service secretaries and chief executives is essential to high performing departments and a high performing Public Service. Secretaries and chief executives are required to work collaboratively in a spirit of service and strive towards the overall goal of a system of world class, professional public sector, serving the Government of the day, and meeting the needs of all New Zealanders.
