Leadership and Mental Health:HG’s Role in the 2023 ACHSM Asia-Pacific Congress

HG was delighted to be an official sponsor of the 2023 ACHSM Asia Pacific Congress in Canberra earlier this month.
The event brought together over 400 delegates from public health, private health and aged care concerned about keeping pace with growing demand while facing major workforce shortages and funding constraints.
Leaders openly discussed the toll it had taken on their mental health to lead through the pandemic, how overwhelming the coming challenges felt and how important it was to invest in leadership development.
It felt particularly fitting then to commemorate the 30th anniversary of our flagship Executive Learning Sets (ELS) program and release our white paper titled “The Changing Dynamics of Leadership Across Thirty Years.”
Without question our ELS program has delivered immense value to thousands of leaders across Australia and New Zealand. How do we know this? Because our members have told us time and time again it has enabled them to sustain themselves throughout their leadership journey and the seismic challenges they have faced.
The paper, informed by three decades of experience and insights, explores the evolution of leadership from the command and control style of old to the chameleon like traits for leaders to be successful in VUCA and BANI operating environments that are now the new norm.
What is clear is systems cannot keep turning the leadership development tap on and off as part of short term savings drives and then bemoan the fact the leadership talent cupboard is bare. Further, that traditional training is not the mechanism to enable leaders to evolve their leadership practice and navigate complex challenges. That is very clearly the domain of action learning in psychologically safe environments that by nature build leadership resilience and preserve wellbeing.
