The New Zealand Treasury, based in Wellington, serves as the government’s lead economic and financial advisor. With a team of approximately 650 staff, the Treasury plays a pivotal role in guiding economic strategy, producing fiscal and economic data, managing government financial affairs, and delivering key services such as New Zealand Debt Management and Export Credit. It is instrumental in shaping the nation’s economic and financial well-being, ensuring sound fiscal, monetary, and regulatory frameworks.

Iain Rennie’s appointment is the result of a rigorous and focused process led by HardyGroup. Over three weeks, the search attracted a diverse and high-caliber field of 14 candidates from New Zealand and abroad. The candidates exceeded the selection criteria, demonstrating strong organisational leadership, public sector expertise, and the ability to manage complex challenges. The process emphasised strategic capabilities, relationships with ministers, and a deep understanding of New Zealand’s fiscal system and Crown-Māori partnerships.

Iain’s extensive experience, coupled with his vision for New Zealand’s economic future, made him the standout candidate for this pivotal role. His leadership will be instrumental in advancing the Treasury’s mission and driving economic reforms that promote equity and sustainable growth.
